What is Phonebook Backup?
Phonebook Backup is a service that lets you back up your mobile phone address book, manage it on the web and synchronize it with your mobile phone.

How does Phonebook Backup protect my mobile phonebook?
Phonebook Backup stores all your contacts from your mobile phone or SIM card to the web. Thus allowing you to easily retrieve and transfer the contacts to any new mobile phone or SIM at a click of a button.

What does it do?
It copies your phonebook from your mobile phone or SIM card and stores it on the web. If you add a new name and contact number onto your mobile phone or SIM card, just update your phonebook by synchronizing with your phone via SyncML or via SIM card method.

How does it work?
There are 3 ways to backup your contacts:
  • via SyncML phone.
    You can synchronize your phonebook wirelessly at any time, practically anywhere in the world. This works over GSM or GPRS/EDGE/3G and does not require the installation of any proprietary software.

  • via SIM card
    Synchronization of contacts will be via auto SMS.

  • via VCard
    Synchronization of contacts will be over SMS by sending Vcard or Business card.

Who can use this Phonebook Backup service?
Open to all Maxis postpaid and Hotlink prepaid subscribers.

Where can I register the service?
To register dial *135# and press SEND/CALL or please contact customer service or walk in to any Maxis Centers for assistance. You may also register through "PBook Backup" menu in EasyAccess. Select "Subscribe" to register.

What are the charges for this service?
You will be charged RM2 monthly for the subscription. The standard data charges (GPRS/EDGE/3G) are applicable every time you synchronize using your mobile phone. The standard data charges:

  • Peak hours - 1sen/kB
  • Off-Peak hours - 0.5sen/kB (12am to 7am)
If you are using vCard/Business card and SIM phonebook backup, you will be charge RM 0.15 per SMS.

Can I terminate the service anytime?
Yes. To terminate dial "#135#" and press SEND/CALL or please contact customer service or walk in to any Maxis Service Center for any assistance to terminate the service. You may also terminate the service through "PBook Backup" menu in EasyAccess. Select "Unsubscribe" to terminate.

How do I know whether my handset supports Phonebook synchronization (Vcard, SyncML method)?

Can I have this service without Internet access?
You need to have access to the Internet to setup and manage your web account. If you are using SyncML phone, you can get your Phonebook synchronization (Sync) setting from the website. However, if you are using the SIM card to backup your phonebook, it is not compulsory to have access to the Internet, as it is automatically backup your contacts.

What is the next step once I have registered to the service?
Please use the verification code sent to you via SMS to register in the Phonebook Backup website. Please follow the step-by-step procedure to set up the service.

If you are using vCard/Business card or SyncML, you can backup all your contact details. However for backup via SIM card you can backup phone number only.

Can the Phonebook Backup support Mandarin (traditional & simplified) characters synchronization?
Phonebook Backup does not support Chinese (traditional & simplified) characters in current phase. You may see "?" in your web phonebook if you have Chinese character in contact. When you synchronize the Chinese character back to handset, you will also see "?" in your handset phonebook for the Chinese characters. Chinese character will be supported in later phase.

How many phonebook contacts can this service support?
The number of phonebook contacts that can be synchronized is phone-dependent. Most phones allow you to store 512 contacts although some can store more than 1000. It does vary slightly depending on how many details are in each entry.

Can I access my entire phonebook via the Maxis website?
Yes. All you need to do is to login to your Phonebook Backup web account to access your phonebook.

Does the Phonebook Backup service backup the contacts from my phone and also SIM phonebook?
If you are using SyncML phone to backup your phonebook, it will backup all the contacts on your phone. However, the phonebook on your SIM needs to be transferred onto your phone to be able to back up the contacts.

If you backup using SIM card, it will back up all the contacts in your SIM memory only.

If you are using vCard/Business card, you can choose to back up your phonebook either from the phone or SIM.

What do I need to have in order to use this service?

  1. You need to subscribe to Phonebook Backup service
  2. A SyncML enabled phone to use SyncML phonebook backup. You also need to subscribe to GPRS/3G.
  3. A SIM card that has "PBook Backup" menu in EasyAccess to use SIM card phonebook backup
  4. A vCard or Business card compatible phone to use vCard backup.
  5. Access to the Internet to register for Phonebook Backup web account.

Can I print my contacts from Phonebook Backup Web?
Yes, you can print your contacts. Select the contact you want to print. Then, select "Print details" to print it.

Can I perform Phonebook Backup whilst out of the country?
Yes, you can still use Phonebook Backup while you are roaming. Please take note, that normal international roaming charges applies for all the transaction you make (e.g. GPRS/3G/SMS).

How do I sync all my contacts?

Is my data secured?
Your data is stored on a secure server. Every measure is taken to protect your data.

Can I use my phone while the Phonebook Backup is running?
You cannot use your phone while you are backing up your contacts. If you have many contacts (e.g. 500) the first synchronization may take several minutes. Every subsequent time you use Phonebook Backup, only the changes will be sent and it should be much quicker, usually between 10 and 30 seconds.

How do I check if a contact I saved on my phone has been copied to my Phonebook Backup Web?
You need to login to Phonebook Backup Web to check if the contact has been copied.

Can I modify my address book on the Phonebook Backup Web?
Yes, you can modify your address book. Select the contact you want to modify. Then, modify your address book. Next, you need to select "Save" to save your new data.

The contact in your handset will be synchronized to replace the one in web.

If a phone/SIM memory is full, can I add some more contact in the website? What will happen? Can I sync my phone?
Yes, you can add more contact in Web phonebook even when phone/SIM memory is full. However, the synchronization will be performed on the contacts within handset/SIM capacity

What is the size of the website account memory for me to store my phonebook? Is there any limitation?
There is no limitation on the number of contacts in customer's web phonebook.

Can I use my current SIM card to back up my phonebook?
To backup via vCard and SyncML, you can use your current SIM card. However, if you want to backup via SIM card, you need to change your current SIM card to SIM card that has "PBook Backup" menu in EasyAccess.

When should I use Sync feature from the SyncML phone or use Sync feature from the SIM card menu?
When you need to synchronize the phone's contacts, you should use Sync feature from the SyncML phone. When you need to backup the SIM Phonebook's contacts, you should use Sync feature from the SIM card menu.

I am using Maxis Multi-Line. Can I backup both my lines?
Maxis Phonebook Backup for Multi-Line user is only offered to the principal line.

I am using Maxis Multi SIM. Can I synchronise my phonebook with all my mobile phones?
Yes, as long as each of your mobile phone has been ever registered in your Phonebook Backup web account.

If I unsubscribe to Phonebook Backup, then I decided to subscribe back, can I still get my previous phonebook?
Once you have unsubscribed to this service, you will not be able to use the Phonebook Backup. However, your phonebook data will be kept in the server a limited time only starting the time of un-subscription. If you subscribe again within the time period you could access to the protected phonebook contact.

If I accidentally sends subscription request *135# twice or more, am I being charged for this?
In this case of repeat subscription, you will not be charged twice.

I'm a prepaid user and I don't have enough credit in my account. Can I still access my web phonebook and do backup?
You can access to your web phonebook account but you cannot perform any synchronisation or backup of contact.

Currently I'm a prepaid user but I want to migrate to Postpaid. What will happen to my Phonebook Account?
If you want to migrate from prepaid to postpaid and vice versa, you need to terminate your Phonebook Backup account first by dialling to #135# or walk in to any Maxis Center. Then you need to subscribe as postpaid user to continue to enjoy the service. If you want all your previous phonebook, you need to subscribe within 24 hours after you terminate your account.

Can I subscribe to Phonebook Backup if I am a Multiline user?
Yes. However, since the Phonebook Backup service tracks subscription based on your mobile number. Therefore, only the first mobile number that initially subscribed to the service is able to perform backup and restoration. Other mobile number(s) that is registered under the Multiline SIM will not be allowed to perform backup and restoration. If you want all mobile numbers to be able to perform backup, subscription must be performed separately on all mobile numbers. In this case, you will be charged monthly fee for each mobile numbers that you have subscribed to the service.

My phone is listed as SyncML-enabled phone. However, I don't have the SyncML client installed in my phone. What should I do?
a. Go to "Configure SyncML phone".
b. Select "Step 1: Checking for installing the software"
c. Here, you may need to check whether your phone has SyncML client installed in your phone or not.
d. If you can see the "Sync" logo and text, it means that the Sync client is already installed.
e. If you cannot see the "Sync" logo and text, then you need to install the client before you can configure your phone.
f. Next, go to "Sync Installation" to manually install the client. You can do this by downloading the client via WAP and following the on-screen instructions to download and install the client.
g. Note: You must install this client in your phone memory not in memory card.

Do you have a connection problem?
Please check the network bar on your mobile phone. You must have a live and stable connection for the service to operate normally.

Have you changed your phone recently?
If you have changed your mobile phone and not updated your account, you will not be able to synchronize. Please login to Phonebook Backup website and update your account with your new mobile phone details.

Do you have a network signal bar on your mobile phone? If the answer is yes, have you synchronized your phonebook since you made the last change? You must synchronize in order to see the same information on the web as is in your phonebook.

If the backup fails half way through, none of your contacts will be transferred and the whole process must be started again from the beginning.

No. Change of login password will only valid for web login. The password in SyncML setting on your phone shall not be changed, please keep what it is as that was originally generated by system.

I don't have WAP set-up on my phone.
You must have some kind of WAP settings configured on your phone to use this service using SyncML phone. Please refer to Maxis website for WAP configuration.

Why do I receive the error 'Please enter WAP settings' when I try to synchronize?
This is probably because your WAP settings are not configured correctly. If you do not have WAP settings, please refer to Maxis website. If you already have WAP settings then please make sure that they are currently set as "Default" when trying to connect.

I accidentally deleted all my contacts. Can I get them back?
Yes. Please follow below procedure.
1. Perform a sync
2. Restore from "Deleted contact"
3. Perform sync again.

The synchronization will not be performed because your mobile number and the sync account setting on the phone does not match.

You do not need to register again. However, if you are using SyncML, you need to update your new mobile phone model via the website. The synchronization will not be performed because his mobile number and your sync account setting do not match.

Then you can maintenance synchronised phonebook on both phone A and phone B by initiating sync from either phone A or phone B, provided the same SIM card is used for each sync.

You can only sync numbers saved on your SIM card if you have a SIM card, which has "PBook Backup" menu in EasyAccess.

If you have been synchronized SIM phonebook before you lose the SIM, when you start to use a new phonebook backup SIM card, your contacts will be automatically restored to your SIM phonebook. Normal SMS charge applies.

If you backup using SIM card, in the "PBook Backup" menu in EasyAccess, there is an option "Auto off" to disable the automatic backup and "Auto on" to enable the automatic backup.

The synchronization process will resume from the point of interruption when the incoming call ends or back to network coverage within 5 hours provided handset is not switched off during the period.

You will not be able to get the phonebook to be stored back into this new SIM card. However, the phonebook data will be still kept in the server and you may retrieve them via the web since you are still subscribing for the phonebook backup service.
